Default MX-5 to S2000

Hi

I recently traded up my MX 5 MkII for a S2000, and wonder how many of you have gone this route also. It was a no-brainer for me as the Honda & Mazda (Letchworth) dealerships are side by side & same company.

The S2000 is far more refined - my MX didn't even have a boot or low fuel warning light (Mazda roadside assistance ). Obviously there is quite a performance gain. Mydriving style hasn't changed much - still changing at frequently, and at high revs.

The aircon / electric roof are great - I would rather have these then the weight saving. Build quality is far better than the Mazda.

The MX seems to have got more admiring looks though

The things I really miss about my mx-5 are: cubby hole, and door sill storage

I had the MX about 15 months and added 20k miles onto the clock. It's on the same dealer's forecourt for

Norton Way shift a fair few S2000s don't they? Believe it or not that is where mine came from

I can't belive the MX5 got more looks than the S though, maybe they are just a lot rarer up here but there are a lot of people trying to do an owl impression when I drive by

Welcome Chris,

Don't worry, you'll never go back.

The S has a secret cubby hole between the seats, and I always gets loads & loads of admiring glances.

Enjoy !!

That cubby hole is a bit harder to get at eg putting on sunglasses @ 90mph

The problem with Norton Way & 4 out of 5 Honda dealerships that I went into over the last couple of months is that they only seem to sit up & pay attention (salesmen) once you have actually bought the car, and they are trying to sell you treatments / extended warranties.

I went into the Chiswick store on a Sunday morning - only person, & 3 to 4 salesbodies. They had a nice new red GT which I wanted. After 10 mins of being very obviously ignored I left, & they didn't get the sale. Mazda wins hands-down on the 'buying experience'.

Just as an aside - Norton are/were flogging a silver parallel import on the forecourt at approx. the same price as a UK car

Just done exactly the same thing myself Chris!

Had an mx-5 1.8 up until April this year, sold it and had to wait for 5 1/2 months to pick up my new 2002 S

Was worth the wait though.

The mx is a great car - the handling was superb. The only thing it didn't have was the power. I still turn my head whenever one goes by, but my whole boy turns when an S flies past

I've only had the car for a week, but here's what I've noticed so far:

The power! Even up until 6000rpm, I can notice the S shifting faster than the mx - we all know what happens after 6k!

The build of the car - feels a lot more solid than the mazda

The driving position is better too - good visibility down the bonnet and you "feel" more attached to the chassis.

I've not noticed any big diffs in the handling yet, but it is (v) early days! The ride is harder than the mx5 though.

No regrets leaving the mx behind - I will miss it though...for about another 2 weeks... until I reach VTECH land...

As another who moved up from the MX5 (after 5 years and 85k miles) to the S2000 I agree with everythng that has been said - except that the S2000 definitely grabs more attention. Nobody ever shouted 'Awesome!' when I drove past in the MX5. The MX5 is, however, a great little car. The chassis is perfectly matched to the engine and the reliability is wonderful. Not a single niggle in five years. My Mazda dealer was also ace. I wouldn't go back though!
