Unhappy My S as started pinking...

I went to Donnington this weekend, filled her up with proper track day juice (98 ron), ive used the whole tank and reverted back to get me to work and back juice (95 ron) been driving about today with top down and could hear a rattle, its like a whistley kinda rattle, im sure its pinking? It happens between 2800 and 3200 revs when you apply light throttle... Ive heard that the injectors on Vtec engines can make strange noises??

Also, ive changed the oil Friday just gone in preparation for thrash to Shell 5w40 Ferrari approved stuff... since then it sounds quite tappety....

I hope i havent broken it Its only done 18k!

Does yours do it (to put my mind at rest)

It may be, as the ECU will advance timing for the 98, then take a little while to revert back when you put not too good stuff it it.

Knock sounds like someone shuffling a tin of nails, and its normally not audible. Id bet on something else.

It does sound like the timing is out... i will nurse it for a few days (or try) and see how it pans out..

If its still noisey im going to go back to 10w40 maybe thicker stuff will do the trick.

I did do a lot of v-teching but im asured these babies can take it...

Should be ok, thats why they have active knock control.

Oil viscosity will make a bit of difference to the sound too.

See what happens I guess!

Is it true no one as ever managed to blow one of these engines yet?

According to Clarkson there had been millions built and not one failure??

Hard to believe but if true at least you would get some fame if you did blow one up!

Thanks Mark.....

Fingers crossed

"Not one failure" of the VTEC bit.
Plenty of engines blown.

IIRC allegedly the Vtec system hasn't failed - doesn't mean other bits of the engine haven't though ..............

never... thats a bit of a con then.

Because the way its said makes it sound like nothing major has failed...
big deal, the vtec system never failed, its just so dam powerful everything around it falls to bits...

Im not going to be so vtec crazy anymore....

Got to admit the sound of the engine at 8300 to 9000 does scare me... I can not believe that any car engine could handle that amount of revs over and over again for a weekend without summat loosening or breaking....

Im starting to go all negative now... i really do think ive broken something!

Think of all those big CC bikes revving to 14k plus

Its designed with tolerances like anything, and designed to rev to 9k for many 10's of thousands of miles

If its that noisy get Honda to have a peek. Still under warranty?
