Top write up

We're travelling through France, Switzerland and Italy in July in the 'S'. I've just had all the hotels confirmed and about to start planning routes.

It is pretty time consuming but Dave (Blurter) has been a superb font of knowledge and experience.

Cheers Andy

Good post, sounds like you had a good time.

the Almalfi coast which is beautiful, but so crowded and busy its not really worth the trip.
We found the same thing, so instead of going along the Amalfi peninsular, we took the coast road south (towards Sapri) and found it was the same type of roads (those great twisting coast roads) but with hardly any traffic (and loads of small towns with cheap seafood restaurants).

I wish we'd done that. we ended up having possibly the worst day of the whole trip - Pompei was great but everything to do with it is very expensive: we parked in a restaurant car park where the parking is 10 Euro but you get that off the restaurant bill at the end - we had 2 pizzas and shared a beer. it cost nearly 70 Euros! we then drove to Almalfi - stunning but just one long line of traffic - I couldn't even enjoy the views much cos i had to concentrate really hard on the bumper to bumper narrow road - a shame really. it sounds like your route towards Sapri was a good choice. we ended up heading home late, and going through Naples in rush hour. I can quite confidently say that the driving in Italy gets worse the further south you go. i didn't think the drivers in Rome were a patch on those from Naples for having no lane discipline, not using mirrors and randomly pulling out or stopping.
