Default Need help fitting ETD

Hey everyone. I got a ETD for my birthday and I tried fitting it today. I fitted both brackets correctly ( as pics showed) but the actual damper is way to long to fit between the brackets. I tried pushing the damper down to see if I could compress it but I can't. Just wondered if anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong?
oh and the instructions were in Japanese.

Pic of damper

And as you can see when I hold them against each other it's way to long.

You know it screws into itself to adjust the length, yes?

Can you open it up and cut it down a bit?

Or send it back and ask for one that does fit

The exposed thread on the body suggests it screws in further than that.

Yes but it won't. Lol. And even if it did it still looks like it would be to long.

What is it like inside - you might have a stack of bushes to allow adjustment ? Or has the bush become dislodged in transit ?

Is the idea of these to stop me hitting the gate when you take it to 9K in 2nd gear then look for 3rd ? I did that with my Mrs in her 1.8T behind me the other day - now she thinks she's as fast as me 'cos I spent about 2 seconds trying to find 3rd (rather than forcing it into 1st)
