Default Need new caliper.

Whilst having my pads changed at Donington yesterday, the chap doing it noticed the piston seal on one of my calipers has perished and needs replacing.

Just spoke to the dealers and they say they have to replace the whole caliper and are going to get back to me with a price.

Just wanted to check this is the norm, and what sort of money I should expect to pay.

Sort of considering upgrading, but it's very hard to justify as the standard one's work so well.

piston seal or dust seal? i'd be suprised if he could see the piston seal and the whole caliper shouldn't need replacing if it is just the dust seal.

Definitely on the piston - he had the caliper off and there was a bloody great hole in it :-(

....actually, where is the dust seal? Out of my depth now

Someone was selling a Caliper refurb kit on the For Sale forum not long ago and that included new seals IIRC.

the dust seal is the one that you can actually see when you take the brake pads off. it stops dust from getting into the space between the piston and the bore.

unless i'm way off the mark with the s2000 caliper (i've never taken off the dust seal to look), there is no way you would be able to see a hole in the piston seal. you'd have to take the piston out to see it, there would be a brake fluid leak through the seal anyway so you would notice brake fluid all over the caliper and brake pad, and no mechanic would have let you out on the track with you brakes in this state.

the dust seal you should be able to get as a spare, and you don't need to refurb the caliper.

There is a caliper seal kit available for the S2000.

Best bet would be a caliper from a scrappy though, should be able to get one for about

It is the dust seal then Thanks

Hmm, I wonder what the dealer will have to say. To be fair, I've probably mislead them.
