Neglected... for 4 years
I may be acquiring a 2005 S2K. It’s low mileage, cheap... and has been sitting on a driveway, uncovered and not driven for the last 4 years. Last MOT was 2014. MOT history is clear before that. It’s in need of considerable care and attention! So, where would you start? What’s likely to require replacement? I haven’t had chance to give it a proper inspection on a ramp yet. Any relevant threads you can point me to? Any advice appreciated (from an MX-5 owner!) |
Geo bolts likely to be seized, you may need to have all the bushes replaced that's around a grand.

I would change all fluids before it's driven
engine oil & filter Gearbox Diff Coolant Brake fluid Then you'll need to free off the brakes I guess Probably new tyres And as Rich says the Geo bolts may be rusted up |
A visit to Dr.MX5 would be in order to get it undersealed when it's all sorted.
As Nottm said fluids first! I would consider getting it low loaded to a good independent garage main dealer will be far too expensive and not many of them know S2000 anymore. Unless you are considering doing it yourself of course. Hope he hasn't had the handbrake on all that time, it will be like a dog going across a carpet.:D |
There was a similar 'barn find' type thread a while ago with lots of good tips. Worth a search.

2005 the best model year so you're doing well either way ;-) what colour it be?
|
Some very helpful advice. Thanks, guys.
Colour...it's kind of a mossy black... I'll have a hunt for the barn find thread. |
Interesting ! Does there appear to be much corrosion visible ? how many miles does it have ?

Have a feel inside the rear ;lip of the rear arches, check under the sills for the grommets in place and have a good poke around under the bonnet - all for signs of tinworm. Also inspect the join between the sills and the rear quarters.
