You could do it now, but I would rather just install the engine as it is and make sure it's working alright. Obviously when the engine is replaced, there'll be new...
- engine oil
- coolant
- ancillary belt
For now before the engine goes in, you could check the clutch plate. If needed, you can easily change that before the engine goes in (assuming the gearbox is off)
You only need to change the Clutch plate itself which slowly wears out and cost less than a 100quid from the dealers. Ten minutes job since the engine is easily accessible.
The whole point is accessibility now, it cost a whole lot less to change the clutch plate now than when you need to when the engine+gearbox is in. Then it takes a lot of labour work to disconnect the gearbox to gain access.
They last quite long if you don't go doing donuts and stuff. I think Ian's clutch lasted over 100,000 miles, but then he does a lot of motorway I'd imagine.
But (for me at least) 90 odd quid is well spent just to avoid the hassle at a later stage.
