Default New wheels

Hey folks, I currently have 18" Oz superleggera alloys on my S2K and since I have started doing more track days I am wanting to change the set up. I can get a second hand set of OEM 16" alloys fairly cheap and I was thinking about sticking on some track tires on like Toyo 888 and using them just for the track. Or am I better off buying a wider set of 17" aftermarket alloys with track tires. Am keeping the 18" for normal day use and the car is completely standard although am looking at fitting coilovers next year also. What would you guys suggest buy the OEM 16" or go with 17"?

Go for 16s with Bridgestone RE002s. £320 for all four tyres, so cheap as chips and you'll have more fun than you would with track tyres fitted.

I opted for Dunlop DZ-03g tyres to go on 16" wheels. They offer plenty of grip and a nice balanced handling, there is no real point widening the wheels unless you are wanting to start racing and are chasing tenths.

Cheers for the feedback guys, Kitesurfer yeah I could put the nankang ns-2r on my 18" alloys but there semi slicks and I want to keep the 18"s for normal driving and I doubt they would be great in the wet. It's my pal that has a spare set of OEM 16"s and with a good clean up and a lick of paint they should look good too. Am sure they have half life Pirelli P7's on them so that's a good start. Am not going crazy chasing tenths just another hobby in the summer

I've sprinted & track dayed with 245 & 215 R888s with standard 16" wheels and with 255 & 215 A048s on 17" wheels. The difference on grip and lap times between 245 16" and 255 17" is negligible. As others have said 16" tyres are cheaper too.

I´d use 17" with yokohama AD08 for the whole year. So you can go for a spirit drive at anytime with good confidence and also perform well in the track! ALL IN 1

I noticed you said you were running 245 & 215's with standard 16" wheels when the standard recommend tires size is 225 & 205. Can you get away with the tires being slightly wider on standard wheels? cheers

Most manufacturers produce a data sheet for their tyres giving you the width range of wheels for the tyre and also the optimum width of rim for any given tyre size. If you are sticking with 16s you are going to have a hell of a game getting the right size tyres in a decent compound. I ended up going for 205/50 on the front, down from 205/55 and 225/45 on the rear rather than the 225/50 so at least the overall diameter of the wheels is off by the same amount, this was with the Dunlop DZ-03g which is an excellent tyres and they were about £525 for the set.
