Default Newbie needing help!

Hiya!

Great forum - first time here! I posted this in the US forum by accident before I realised there was a UK forum

I am thinking of getting an S2000 to replace my VX220 that unfortunately got written off. I was lucky enough to get a 2 hour test drive on my own so pushed the car pretty hard. Obviously I cannot fault the build quality, gearbox and the VTEC, but my major concern was the lack of flat cornering, which although was reasonable compared with say a 350z, was a long way off what I am used to.

I spoke to Mugen here in the UK and they didn't seem to think that there were any specific s2k suspension kits (like Nitrons/Ohlins/Spax for the VX) that could help. While at some point I would be likely to get the engine remapped, and get the Mugen induction/exhaust setup to improve the lower end torque, I was wondering what is available in the UK to get the car flatter and harder around the bends. I also thought the nose dipped significantly under heavy breaking. Any fix for this?

Lowered stiffer suspension and bigger wheels/tyres.

18x8 fronts 18x9 rears lowered 40mm and 25% stiffer eibach sports springs.

Ps welcome to the fun.

I am sure that picture is one of the most used on this site, looks good though.

I agree with Ade, there are plenty of options in the uk for suspension, ohlins etc, you just need to know what you are doing

Well, it won't corner like a VX so if that's what you're looking for you won't get it - the S is a bigger car with a higher COG. Lowering/ stiffening the car might help a little, I would look at some adjustable suspension (~

There are a couple of threads about proper suspension replacements. Leda and Olins ring a bell, but I could be wrong.

I can't remember the threads imparticular, but I know a man who does....

I would avoid big tractor wheels as they will just slow you down.
Or putting on lowering springs unless aesthetics are more important than decent suspension travel

Thanks people for your input so far

I don't expect it to handle like a VX - the reason I am about to get an s2000 is because I need something a little more practical than a VX without too much compromise for B road blasts and occasional track use (Palmersport, the 'Ring). I used to drive my VX pretty hard right up to my own personal limit as a driver and within the limits of the car. Having said that, although I loved my 2 hour test drive in the s2000, I was a lot more nervous about pushing on too quickly. The back end stayed firmly planted to the road (the road was damp) but anecdotally I hear that the s2000 can be twitchy, and in the press too, more so than expected.

Is this because drivers of s2000s come from FWD cars previously, or is it actually like that? I assume 2 years behind the wheel of a VX (without ever losing the back end) is pretty good preparation for an s2000 (than say coming from a Corolla!), although obviously I would treat it with growing care as my driving ability and knowledge of the car improves.

I didn't know Mugen had a distributor in the UK.

Mugen do an adjustable suspension kit for the S2000 but it costs megabucks.

Check out the King Motorsport website for all the Mugen S2000 kit available.
