Default Nitrogen

My local tyre dealer is offering nitrogen instead of air for tyre inflation. Pretty expensive but they make lots of claims including improved mpg. Anyone here using nitrogen or heard of any reports about it.

Air is 70% nitrogen.

Snake oil for road cars.

But yes I agree there's little point in going to N2 unless you're in F1 etc.

My tyres are filled with N2 but that's because we have it on tap at work

I do notice that the pressure is very stable over time, compared to common old air
MPG claims would seem to be a bit wacky though.

They put it to the test on 5th gear and came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the money, I also heard the local garages don't use the nitrogen that f1 teams use / not pure/contaminated......good money spinner tho I'm sure.

My local SET Tyre pro centre did mine for free .The tyre pressure's do stay more stable to the extent that I rarely have to top up .

The problem with nitrogen from your average local tyre fitter is water content . The proper stuff used by motor sport will be pure .

The reason that they claim nitrogen to be more stable is that it should be dry nitrogen, as it is the moisture content in air that makes the pressures deviate as they do. So Nitrogen does acutally work, however the fifth gear test proved inconclusive as the garage that filledd the tyres didn't purge them to evacuate the moisture and air that would naturally be in the tyre from fitting it.

I too have dry nitrogen on tap but haven't tried it yet as I don't really mind playing about with my tyre pressures at the track.

Also it won't improve MPG but will prevent a loss of MPG from temperature deviation causing the pressures to drop, more of a play on words and not anything that you would notice unless you do several thousand miles with some highly accurate scientific logging gear attached to the car and a team of scientists to crunch the data.

Yes I agree re: moisture content, which is why I only use 'Laserpure' 100% Nitrogen from BOC Gasses

Makes bugger all difference though lol, and if you don't have access to N2 then whenever you check your pressures you'll lose some and be unable to top it up again without going back to the garage!

If we're going to be nerdy about it there is no such thing as 100% pure nitrogen. Lasepure is 99.9992% pure from memory.

And i can beat your BOC lasepure in that i make my own nitrogen with contamination levels down to around 20ppm

Still don't put it in my tyres though.

I've got it in mine to try and keep pressures stable.
