Default Not impressed

Hi Guys

Just serviced the car myself for the 27K service.

Did the Diff using Redline 75w-90 oil, all went ok, was expecting to use the full US quart still some left hope this is correct.

Also decided to the the transmission oil whilst under the car, again using redline MTL.

Took the car for a spin, and i reckon the car feels even notchy now with the gears, i have read many posts about how much redline improves the feel of the gears, not too happy, may remove the MTL stuff and replace with something else.

Air filter replaced and all the usual service checks, checked.

Hope i have used the correct stuff.

Hmmm, the diff uses almost 900ml of oil which is US quart IIRC. How much do you have left?

I changed to Redline on my 02 S, it made it more notchy than
before.
That gearbox was one of the reasons I got rid of the car,
horrible.

Also put it into my 04 S, now that made a difference but I
would say the gearbox is over rated on the S.

Russ.

The S gearbox is a precision tool, drive any current porsche or BMW and they feel pretty poor in comparison and that's an unbiased view coming from me as I plan to upgrade to one of those marques after the Skip...

It's beyond me how anybody couldn't rate it highly tbh.

I'm glad to read that other people think the gear box is a bit "notchy", as I was starting to wonder if that was normal on my car. It's not like the gears ever grind or fail to engage but you do have to be accurate.

Performance cars demand precision engeering, and a by product of that can be a notichy gearbox or heavy clutch.

When i changed the gearbox oil to redline mt90 in my old mr2 turbo, it took a couple of hundred miles before i felt any benefit from the oil. But then the difference was significant.

I love a notchy box, if I ever drive anything else (better halfs car, hire car, mates cars etc..) their boxes just feel wrong, imprecise and like stirring porridge, the S box is another thing that makes the car feel like something special.

Castrol SMX-S in mine... I think it feels a little better than standard, but there's not a lot in it.

Like others, I haven't been blown away by the slickness of the S2000 gearbox. But then I came from an ITR, which is pretty darn good, anyway. Actually one of the best gear shifts I've known was on an old G-reg 1.0 VW Polo!
