Notchy gearbox .... Possible fix :)
Hey guys,
Thought this might help a few, my gearbox felt quite notchy compared to my previous S although i have FHSH and HONDA MTF was put in less than 4000 miles ago.
That said i wanted to see if i could make any improvements. I was speaking to OpieOils who suggested some fully synthetic 75w/85w gearbox oil. Halfords sell this at 12.99 a litre you need roughly 1.7ltrs to change the oil. This on it's own made a massive difference and my gearbox was quite smooth after from cold.
I also however regreased the slave cylinder fork, which made a huge difference - Guide in the link below

It takes about 15 minutes to do and it's just two bolts to undo the slave cylinder then pull the boot off and get the rod out.
The ball has a small nipple on the and which needs to be sanded or grinded off, then polish the ball upto a high standard and use any multipurpose High temp grease to regrease the cup and ball on refitting.
This again made a night and day difference and the gearbox feels like new with no notchy feeling even from cold
Both are very easy to do DIY and both make a huge difference, this isn't new knowledge as far as i'm aware, but thought i'd share for those that don't venture out the UK forum.

Agree, this info is widely known on here for both points.
Expect the smoothness to become less smooth once the oil gets used, around a couple of hundred miles, unless the oil was shit to begin with.

I wouldn't mind if i had to do it every month, it's that easy and makes such a difference!
Yeah, i wouldn't say mine was in a bad shape, the ball only needed a light going over with wire wool, then polished up with a DA. There was no grease at all though on the ball and a small amount in the cup.

Did my ball two months ago makes the clutch loads lighter, Opie sold me some Amsoil MTF, cured the notchyness, now it just feels tight and positive. Like night and day!
Found a cheep valve grinding kit best, I used a dremmel to ket rid of the nipple, then course paste followed by fine, then Autoglym metal polish to finish, greased it up, and Roberts your fathers brother!

Guide included in the FAQ IIRC.
I had a new clutch fitted last week, and the difference is incredible. I think my thigh muscles may suffer!

Clutch was £875 fitted including new subframe bolts, which are apparently important.
You can get it done a fair bit cheaper by using one of the independents like Garage-R or DMS.
The difference is night and day, as it's incredibly light now.
