A couple of people recently asked me where I had my number plate made up and I stated that I thought that it could be difficult to find anyone to make up these plates now as a new law from January means that all plate manufactures have to be licensed and to get a plate made up you now need to show proof of ownership of the vehicle.
Today I called up Trade Direct, the guys who I have used to make up quite a few of my bike / car plates, to find out what the score was.
Seems that they are getting around this new law by making up "show" plates. These plates will normally be non road legal in that they will be mis-spaced or have incorrect size lettering or font (which is what people on here were looking for).
I asked him about the font that he used on my plate and he tells me that it would be "New Euro". My plates also have a honeycomb backing but you only notice this close up.
So anyone looking for a plate I would recommend these guys
I ordered my registration today from DVLA Now waiting for the documents and then a trip to the local DVLA, need to get my plates now, thanks for the links guys
Once you have the documentation from the DVLA (usually within the week), then you can take that, your V5 and tax disk to your local office straight away and the transfer is done there and then swap the plates around and away you go..
I was really dtruggling to find someone to make up my new front plate - many of the established companys just said 'sorry we cant do that any more, we'll loose our licence'.
No such worries at Impact Signs (for a show plate, of course )
Documentation came 2 days after I bought the plate.
Allow about a 3hr wait in DVLA
Interesting point here, when I arrived at DVLA in Preston, the car park was full. There were cars parked 2 wheels on the kerb all over the place. I used my "defensive parking" technique and parked some 400Yds. down the road. Took the tax disk out of the window & went in.
When I eventually came out the Police were there having a field day, handing parking tickets out like confetti. I reckon parking down the road (I NEVER kerb my car) saved me a "failing to display tax" fine!
BTW you don't need your tax disk, they just give you a new one.
People with old cars - don't forget your MOT certificate.
I needed to hand over my tax disc before they would issue a replacement. No parking issues at DVLA Northampton, popped in on my lunch hour and there wasn't even a queue
Also its bang next door to the police headquaters so guess their used to the car in the carpark with no disc.
