Default Oil consumption

There's probably and answer to this in FAQ, so I hope I don't get flamed, but I find the search facility somewhat less than effective (when it's working at all!), so here goes ...

My S is just over 4 years old (registered Sept 2001 -- does that make it "MY01"? I'm not quite sure of the significance of "MY") and has nearly 45000 on the clock. Should I expect to be topping up the oil every week? (about 1/2 a litre, I guess, on a mileage of about 500)

You should certainly be checking it every week. How much oil it burns will depend on how hard you have driven it - the more VTECing you've done, the more oil it will have been likely to have burned (as a general rule).

It seems to vary from car to car how much it uses but I'd certainly expect your car to get through between 500ml and a litre in 1,000 miles.

Just check it regularly and you should be fine

It has been known. I've spoken to people that have used 1l of oil in 1000 miles.

Do you drive it hard? Maybe you should ask your dealer. Pie and Chips was having problem with oil consumption that is resulting in a new engine. Have you got a warranty? If no, it could be time to buy one (from Honda) and let it run for a couple of months to avoid suspicion

And yes a 2001 car is MY01

Mine is new and uses absolutely no oil even driving it hard. Reckon oil consumption=engine wear. Thing is, is the amount of oil you use worth spending money on repairs?

They made adjustments to the 04 - onwards cars to reduce oil consumption.

The early cars are notorious oil drinkers

dill: That level of oil consumption is not unheard of.

wampa: Have you read the Owners manual? that shows what oil to put in, so does the FAQ which you've been directed to a number of times. If the oil warning light comes on, you are fecked, it should NEVER have cause to come on. You really should not own this car.

That's OK - oil consumption can vary (a lot).

0W-40 to 10W-30 is the range of oil viscosity you need to be looking at.

Yes.

You should never rely on a low oil warning light.

That;s because the light is not a low level indicator, it is a low oil pressure light, once it's on the engine is pretty much fecked (unless you're very very lucky).

Wampa, read the faq. Oil is the second paragraph in the whole of the faq

Oil

Stay mineral until 6k or first service, run in oil should be 10W30 (preferred) or 10W40 (more readily available and perfectly acceptable). Halfords do 10W40 in an orange bottle MAKE SURE YOU BUY MINERAL. Synth up (if you desire) after that. If any engine work (or early servicing) is done pre 6k, ensure additive molybednum is requested. This is a `run in` additive that assists lubrication.

Ensure regular, REGULAR, checks are made to the oil levels. Each X on the dipstick is approx 100ml so top up accordingly. When checking the dipstick, check both sides, choose the lowest of the two sides and treat this as your current oil level. Always ensure oil levels are checked once oil has drained into the pan. Always ensure car is not on an angle when checking. Keep it horizontal.

Low oil can result in (above the obvious evil engine wear and subsequent seizures) a lack of VTEC engagement. I don`t know this personally, I just know people have complained about vtec issues and low oil has been their problem.

4.8l of oil is needed for a full oil change.
