Had this.
If you have one of these little plugs connected to the PC - check the brass coloured connectors. If they are out of line - gently persuade them back.
Be careful - they are fragile!

This happens to me occasionally. The update software isn't the best in the world.

Did you update the software a few months back ?

When it happens I just retry later.....

Normally works after a bit.

I have that every time now - always works if I close down the Origin software and then load it up again.

Might be this.
Here's the email from Origin in January this year, with a link for the software update:

Dear Customer

Last week we informed you that we are about to
release an important upgrade to the Origin Update
utility, to accommodate some changes being implemented
by some ISPs (Internet Service Providers).

We are pleased to announce that the new upgrade is
now available for download.

DO I HAVE TO UPGRADE?
Yes, after 17th January all Origin b2 users downloading
via a PC will need to have the new software installed.

WHAT IF I USE A MODEM TO UPDATE MY UNIT?
If you use the modem supplied with the unit instead of a PC
you are not affected by this upgrade you DO NOT need to do
anything. Please continue as usual. However, if in future
you want to update via a PC then you will need to download
and install the new software first.

CAN I USE THIS SOFTWARE ON A MAC?
No, the software is Microsoft Windows compatible only.
(However, Mac software will be arriving soon.)

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD THE NEW SOFTWARE?
The new upgrade is now available for download via the
members' section of origin b2 web site at:

http://www.originb2.com/memberslogin.cfm

When you have logged into the member's area please click
'software updates' on the left-hand menu and download
the file 'b2-setup'. This file will be in .zip format.
Once downloaded, extract the .zip file and run the
'OiupdV133_setup.exe' file.

Once the file has run you will be prompted to 'Modify,
Repair, Remove', select the option for 'modify',
continue until the 'finish' button is displayed,
then select 'finish'.

Your Origin b2 will then be ready to update.

Many Thanks

Ian
Since the updated software hasn't helped, have you tried a different COM port in the software interface? Mine uses COM1, but your PC might have assigned a different one.
Have you looked in device Manager (start > settings > control panel > system > hardware > device manager) to see if there's a problem with your COM port?
Have you tried file > initialise remote in the Origin updater utility?
Sorry - clutching at straws here, but this is what I'd try.
If this failed, I'd be contacting Origin.
HTH.

Has the update ever worked since Norton was on the machine ???
Norton is a PITA for blocking outbound ports and not asking.
