Default Overheating

Had a lucky escape from a head gasket going. Driving and noticed temperature gauge was heading to the red section. Pulled up and saw some water/coolant leaking. AA guy came over and topped up water, to my surprise it was no ordinary small leak, water was simply gushing out from a gaping hole in the rad.
Not sure how I obtained that, because everything seemed ok before, i did not feel any knocks which might have caused it break, maybe a stone but i did not hear it.
Anyway AA guy managed to use some compound and bond it with the metal, so he sealed the hole both externally and Internally temporarily.
Lucky escape!

Anyone know approximately how much i can get a a rad at the breakers? I mean what prices to expect?
