Default Oxygen Sensor

Hi all,

Had my car in at Honda yesterday after the engine diagnostic light came on. They checked it out and said i needed a new Oxygen sensor. They have oredered it and will fit in under warranty so no problems there.

Just wondered what this sensor does? Not a tech head so thought i would ask if anyone else knows?

Thanks,

Simon.

Hi Simon,

It tells the car's engine management how your fuelling is working, and tells it how much fuel to put in.

It's screwed into your exhaust manifold.

They fail quite commonly after 30-50k miles.

That explains it then, car has just done 29,000 miles, so a bit low for a fail but hey ho. At least the warranty is covering it! Would that explain an increase in fuel consumption? As i was thinking it was drinking a little bit more than usual!?

or it could be down to the weather being a little bit better ie more VTEC action!

Yep, you will use a lot more fuel. Normally about 40 miles less to a tank.

When they fail, they send a signal to the ECU that the fuel mixture is lean, when it really isnt, so the ECU puts a lot more fuel in to compensate.

It can also make your idle unstable and the car may have tried to cut out.

Havent experienced any cutting out yet, but will definately follow up the delivery of the part to the dealer, as 40 miles per tank can soon add up, and start costing serious money!

I swapped mine after 60k and it gave me approx 5-10% improvement in mpg. Normal driving, 190miles per tank up to 220, and much better when cruising.

Cheeky question, any idea how much they are? Honda or motor factors.

Are we talking the o2 sensor just before the CAT? I might do mine if its not too expensive and see what the mpg returns are.

Atleast you got it sorted under warranty, thats a good shout
