Greetings all. I've done several searches but i'm unable to come up with anything conclusive so thought i'd ask.

The other day (after 200 odd motorway miles and then being left overnight) my CEL came on. The car ran absolutely fine, mpg fine, vtec works, everything seems perfect.

I had my suspcions it might be the air pump, but after plugging in a code reader it seems its an oxygen sensor throwing up the fault.

The fault read as follows:

Oxygen sensor
Circuit range
Performance bank
Sensor 1

So my question is which sensor is this, I assume its the pre cat sensor?

Finally, seems odd to me that a sensor has gone. The car is an 08, 23k miles and standard bar a K&N, I was hoping for another 100k or so before the sensors started failing

I've done 10k miles with the K&N and not cleaned it yet, it still looks spotless, but could contamination be causing the CEL?

Try and reset it first, see if goes away, if it does it might come back and then you need to replace the sensor, but I had this before (on a different car) and I reset the fault using Torque for Android and the fault never came back, touch wood!

So, if I were you, I would try that first.

But yeh, it is the pre cat.

 

Yeah I tried that, it stayed away for a couple of journeys and then came back on. I'm guessing its marginal at the moment as it seems to have no effect on the performance.

I've ordered a new sensor, 50 quid for a bosch replacement with discount from eurocarparts. I was pleasantly surprised.

 

Yeh that's not too bad, you can get a lambda sensor special socket from amazon as well which makes getting it out much easier than with a spanner.

Bosch sensors dont tend to do too well on Honda's. i usually fit Denso or NGK. Had too many issues with cheap ones, and Bosch seem to run at wrong voltage for some reason.

 

Walker or OEM, everything else including ebay jobbies are either poor quality or have the wrong response rate.

 

O2 sensors should be considered a service item IMO.

They pay for themselves very quickly.

 

mid teens mpg now back up to the high 20s ... amen to that ;-)

 

Oh well, we'll see how long the Bosch one lasts and if that fails I'll go oem.

I hate it when that happens, you act all independent, think you have sorted a problem, order the part only for people to turn around and say, you know, I would have ordered this part as it will save you money in the long run! It is the most frustrating thing ever, you just think, damn I wish I had waited!

Its not having a go at the people on here or anything, don't get me wrong, I just hate that feeling where being all independent and sorting a problem out back fires on you. Does that make sense...? Probably not!
