Default Radar Detectors

Anyone use them?

Been "saved" by them?

Recommended models?

I've never felt the need to have one - but now.......

Cheers!

Hi John,

I've got a Snooper S5, which I bought off the net (slightly cheaper than Halfords etc). It is supposed to pick up Gatso's, mini-gatso's and hand held guns. The only think it can't detect is Digital speed cameras (thankfully a rare breed - at the moment!)

As far as whether it works or not, I can certainly tell you which camera's on the M25 have film in (or not). It will start to pick up a signal about 200m away or so from the camera which 'should' give you enough time to adjust your speed accordingly!

I don't know anyone else that has/uses a radar detector and this is the only one I've had so I've got nothing to compare it with - but it has saved me from several points!

The only annoying thing is it has a penchant for garage forecourts, Heathrow airport, and a 3 mile area in Liverpool - but as long as you can put up with the odd 'false alarm' I'd say it was a worthwhile investment.

Hope this helps

LB

Hi,

If you check out:-

www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk

there is a really good guide there, and there are some laser diffusers that work as well!

to be honest I think I sould get some to help avoid the "accident blackspots" where most devices are deployed.....

I've had a RD for seceral years now (two different Uniden models). As Leggy Blonde says, it's a PIA with false alarms (trafiic lights and security systems in commercial buildings being the main culprits) so you have to be careful not to ignore warnings, just in case it's not a false alarm. Mine has saved me twice, once in Walsall in a 40 mph limit, big long wide main road - PC with a hairdryer halfway down, and once here in Shrewsbury. Again, as LB says, a RD also tells you which GATSO's are live and working.

I'm considering buying a laser diffuser and the Blue-i also. I should then be pretty well catered for.

Next step would be "chaff" and a missile system

Pete,

Couldn't you then use the blue-i to call in an airstrike from a nearby carrier?

I have a Beltronics 990 international. It's super reliable and the only false alarms that I ever get are from garage forecourts. IMO it's a good piece of kit as long as you combine it with a keen general awareness of your surroundings.

Only downside is it's a nightmare on the restricted speed limit section of the M25 - the continuous beeping drives you mad! I usually switch it off as the traffic never generally goes above the legal limit anyway!

geodesy rocks

http://www.morpheous.co.uk

gps tracking combined with a database of every speed camera in the uk

wont protect you from pc plod at the side of the road - but that's what your eyes are for

origin thing is too big for my liking - the geodesy sits nicely on the dash above the engine start/audio controls
