I would go for a TOMTOM 300. Easy to use, flexible, can be used when walking around town as well and you can buy maps for the whole of Europe if you needed to.

I'll have a look at the i3 - I've already got a handheld Garmin eTrex which I've been impressed with (on the couple of occasions I've used it!) and I know the Carper rates Garmin stuff. Ta.

Keep 'em coming, if there are any more likely suspects out there!

Might be worth waiting for the new TomTom One. Looks to be positioned (on price) below the TomTom 300 and uses the Garmin chipset.

Garmin. Choice of heteros.

There is always ToyToy - I like the one that sjp mentioned, its decided to bat for the other side with mens innards.

in the last two weeks my friend has got hold of a tomtom 300 and says that it's performance is impeccable: good, stable software; ease of navigation (through the menus); expandability (with the memory stick) for POI/ cameras.

IIRC he got it FREE with a deal through a vodafone store!!!

BUT

driving around London can be a pain because when you're in amongst high-rise buildings, the terminal loses signal - you're there waiting for instructions and the screen is all grey and blue (no signal!!)

There is a cure for it though - an extended aerial, but i understand this is quite expensive...
