Default Rolling....

With the recent crashes/rolls and people getting out pretty much ok, it got me thinking...

Has anybody rolled an S with the roof down?

It would be the same as rolling it with the roof up. There is nothing more protecting you than a 2 mill cloth roof. You might get a bit dirtier and scratched if you rolled through a hedge, but the roll protection comes from the windcreen and rear roll hoops.

I remember one particularly horrendous one in tne US on The Dragon Run where an S went down a bank/ borderline cliff and landed upside down on a hard rock surface. The roof was down at the time, and the driver was unscathed, It's probably about 3 years ago, but someone will remember it I'm sure. There were loads of pics about at the time, also a video of the S spinning out just before a bend , leaving the road and going airborne!

Protection comes from the A-post not the windscreen (being pedantic I know ) as well as the Roll bars.

On some of the new convertibles in the market there are also a couple of thick metal spikes that fire out of the rear of the car behind the roll hoops/bars.

Stick it up if you can Ian, it shows how lifting off can have disastrous consequences. I think he might have braked as well - not sure now.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that there's a roll bar built into the top of the windscreen, - an extention of the A pillars in effect?
I think there is. It isn't much use to those of us who's heads are higher than the rear roll hoops though
