Default Rubber

Had my S for a couple of months. When I was washing it on Saturday I noticed my drivers side rear tyre was about half way inflated. Went to the garage and filled it up, come to drive it this morning and its back to half way.

Obv there is a problem but I cant see any screws or anything in it. I know its difficult to say but what is deemed as repairable these days? They are Potenas by the way. And does anyone know how much they are to replace?

Thanks

If the hole is in the main contact surface of the tyre it's generally repairable. You have a 2003 so I guess you have S02's. If you have to replace you'll need to replace the axle pair. And you probably can't get hold of S02's any more. So if the fronts are low too it's probably wise to replace that pair too, so you're not mixing tyres.

Assuming he can get another of the same type, are you sure about that?

I had a puncture in a front which was not repairable as the nail was too near the sidewall. I replaced just that tyre. Admittedly, both fronts had only done a couple of thousand miles at that point, so it wasn't like a had one nearly-dead one on the other side to go with the new one....

The reason for replacing the axle pair is S02's are no longer available in most places, and mixing compounds on an axle, especially the rear axle on an S, is a complete

However if you can source an S02, and there's still plenty of tread on the other tyres, then it's probably ok to just replace the one. It's more likely that you'll need to replace the pair though.

I realise mixing across the axle is imprudent in the extreme - but that's not quite what you said to begin with, hence my query!

I wouldn't worry too much about the safety of repairs. I had this nail damage repaired on a month old tyre and had no problems, despite some serious hooning ...

The one I referred to above was in the same kind of place but two separate tyre fitters refused to repair it, David. I guess you just got lucky!

(Mind you, I suppose it's no surprise that they say they can't repair them - they then get the chance to sell you a replacement....)

Take off your valve cap and put some spit on the valve top with your finger, if it causes a bubble, your valve is faulty, nice and cheap to fix.
