Run in Oil
The new S arrives in July and having read the faq at the top I know it will drink oil as its run in. I need to know what oil I should use to top up with? Can I buy the run in oil from Honda? I know that 10-30 or 10-40 are fine and that the Halfords orange has been suggested but would like to know what others have used in the run in period and what they switched to after. Have always used Magnatec in my ATR with no probs, but thats semi-synth.
TIA,
Jason.

I bought 5 litres of Castrol plus a single litre pack to carry in the boot. Plan was to follow the "advice" and use a mineral oil for the first 9,000 miles then go synthetic.
We drove 20 miles to a Honda dealer to get the "Honda" oil - the 10-30 stuff as recommended. Got there and they use a German manufactured oil - and not a Honda badged 10-30 - in fact not a 10-30 at all which is why we went down the Castrol route.
However - I now have maybe 50 miles short of 2,000. I was very careful up to 600 miles - keeping the revs way down. Up to 1,000 miles I was cautious - which included the SM3 run. Now I VTEC when can once the engine is warmed up - but I take due note of speed limits so nothing spectacular. I live in a rural area so I can use the engine. I hit the rev limiter twice tonight through not paying attention so hardly a "tootler".
So far - 2,000 miles remember - the oil level has dropped one X on the dipstick - around 100ml - from new. At this rate my oil supply will last rather longer than I had anticipated.
Word is some engines use a lot of oil - some use minimal oil. VTECing uses more. Care during the 600 mile run in seems to reduce oil consumption generally.
I would not buy too much until you know your car.

The Halfords orange one for the first 9000 miles, used full 5 litres.
Now on mobil 1 and still using about 150ml of that per tank of fuel.
The car does tend to frequent vtec a lot but indicators tend to point to it being a "loose" example. To quote one of my s2ki friends, " a loose engine is a fast engine."
As an aside I still average 28.2 mpg over last 10,000 miles despite most of it being in the welsh mountains.
Swings and roundabouts I guess.
Noony

As I said above I drove 20 miles to my Honda agent to buy some of the real Honda 10-30 only to be told they use Fuchs oil http://www.fuchs-oil.com and Fuchs do not do a 10-30!
Hence the Castrol Magnatec.
EDIT - :sheepishlook: Er! My mistake - NOT Magnatec (which is semi synth) but GTX - which is plain old oil.

It has been suggested to use Magnatec from the start due to the moly. content, which is high in the run in oil that is in the car straight from the factory (thank you for that, appreciated!), I know that magnatec is semi-synth, but having been in Halfords it seems the old Orange bottle stuff has changed slightly and now is not pure mineral
(though that info was given by one of the people working there!).
