Running cost estimates
Hi, I'm this |--| far away from buying an S2000 and was looking to get an idea for what the running costs might be like. I'm looking at a 2004/5-ish model with ~30k on the clock and was wondering if owners (with cars of similar age/milage) might be able to give rough figures for how much they have spent on maintenance in the past 12 months.
Thanks for your help

Depends on a lot of things.
How old are you (Insurance)?
How far do you drive?
How hard are you going to drive?
Are you going to pay for servicing?
Are you going to buy premium consumables (tyres/oils/fuel/brakes).
In my first year based on 12k miles I came in at about £6000 without modifications.

Rear tyres will last at around 6000 to 8000 miles. - 100 pounds each ( Falken 452)
Front tyres will last about 10,000 to 12,000 miles. - 80 pounds each ( Falken 452)
Both of the above are dependant on geometry settings and driving style. If your geometry is out and needs adjusting, you may have seized bolts - add up to 1200 pounds if all of them are seized.
One full set of discs and pads. - up to 600 pounds depending what you go for
A full service, fluids and a valve check / adjustment. - up to 500 pounds depending who you use and what service you get.
I would use 240 miles per tank as a good average and that's 48 litres. You'll get less if you abuse VTEC everywhere and up to 300 miles per tank if you drive like miss daisy.
That's potentially 2660 pounds assuming the worst about the geometry adjustment and that you get it serviced by Honda.
I've done about 12,000 miles in mine and get around 240miles to a tank, 50 tanks which works out to around 3000 pounds in petrol.
It's a very high insurance group car, unless you're as old as Lucifer, expect to pay through the nose to insure it. I'm 37, clean license, no points, good postcode and i struggled to get it under 600 pounds this year.
Oh and budget 250 pounds a year for Hondas extended warranty.
Then there's cosmetic bolt on modifications such as exhausts and intakes, you can lie to yourself and say that you won't do it but as soon as you hear one that has been fiddled with it's going to be hard to say no. How far you choose to slide down that slope is entirely down to how much money you have in the bank
That's another vote for the figures above.
When you've picked yourself up off the floor, remember you'll forget most of the costs as soon as you drive it with the roof down

Interesting. Thanks for that breakdown.
I've had insurance quotes (~£850 due to me being 26 I assume). Also I've got an idea for petrol because my previous car had similar consumption (in theory).
So I'm adding on figures for servicing/tyres etc basically - that's what I'm hoping to get an idea of from here - wanted to see if I could get some indications for yearly cost. I'm estimating about 12k a year usage. Just searching for the service schedule to see if any major ones appear at 30k/6years, but can't find it ... link anyone?
By geometry do you mean wheel alignment or is there more to it than that? (I'm still learning a lot here).
Also, the extended warranty - do you require the car to have always been serviced at Honda to take one out? Can I still take one out on a 2004/5 model?
Lots of questions, thanks for your help folks. Much appreciated. I'm pretty excited about getting this sorted for myself.

Servicing depends where you are and if you can find a good local independant, if you want Honda Warranty, i think you'll have to pay Honda service prices. Dealer prices vary widely so again, worth shopping around. Not sure if you can take a Dealer warranty out on a car that isn't bought from a Dealer.
