Default Rusty wishbones

took my front and rear wheels off this weekend and noticed quite a lot of surface rust on the wishbones

I am assuming this is normal to have some surface rust but is there anyway to prevent it?

I am planning to take all 4 wheels off and give the underside and arches a good clean would a liberal spay of WD40 on all the metal parts (not discs obviously) be an idea or could this loosen up any nuts?

Sometimes WD40 in this application can be counter productive. It creates a surface that attracts grit and makes things worse. If pumped onto a nut it will penetrate. If torqued up correctly I doubt if loosening will be a problem. But the grit situation could be an issue.

I notices the surface rust too - even though I don't drive in the rain!

It's normally at the front side of the wishbone where stones chip it. I've got myself some black rust proof paint - should take ten minutes to do both sides.

I am a tad obsessive regards my car and like it it be as mint as possible

the penetration of nuts is an issue with a lubricant though I guess

Zero - don't use any wd40 - just use a wire brush or just wipe them down to get the dust off and then coat with some rust paint. I got mine for 99p from Hellfords.

do you brush the rust paint on?

being that you've gone down the titanium exhaust route is there anybody you know of who manufacture wishbones out of a light alloy?

I am now going to think along the lines of making the car as light as possible and I remember reading that Honda chose steel for cost reasons

When you consider weight saving every bit helps I guess, but on the grand scheme of things, last week I replaced so vented discs on another car - can`t believe how heavy they are.....bloody mental weight.

I'll check the Hyper Rev bible for you tonight - I do remember seeing some in there.

The paint is easily brushed on. It's black and comes in matt or gloss. I'll be doing it tonight.

I couldn't believe how heavy the rear wheels are

I can see Magnesium wheels, titanium exhaust would save a lot of weight

Mind you I could do with a carbon fibre beer gut as well
