Default The S is still fast..

My S is up for sale and i'll be sad to see it go, not least for the acceleration and that great Vtec noise! But you get used to the power and its hard to use all the performance on the road what with speed camera, traffic lights and other traffic. Had a few little 'tests' over the last couple of months and the S has come out on top or held its own!

Had a rolling start test against my mates E46 Alpina B3 and i pulled away, not much but a bit up to about 75ish. Got perfect gear changes which helped as all he had to do was pressed his right foot down! Had expected his to have the edge although i guess the rolling start (from about 15mph) helped me more than him!

A few weeks ago, i was out for a blast with the roof down at night and pulled up at some lights next to a new Golf GTI. The guy was middle aged with what appeared to be his wife in the car and the lights changed and he rocketed off! I didnt and then he had stopped at the next set. He did the same again and unusually, i didnt respond! Third set and i decided that i might see how fast his was. So i went for it, expecting there to be not much in it but i left him for dead! I pulled clean away and he was definitely going for it!

Then about a month ago, not really a true test but was funny all the same. Pulled up next to my mate in his 996 C4S at some lights, and we both set off pretty quickly! There wasnt much in it really then he missed a gear and i was gone! Not a true test but looking at the power to weight for both, the S is 191bhp/ton and the C4S is 218bhp/ton so not a great deal between them although i know the Porka has a massive grip and handling advantage with the 4WD.

Just thought i'd share my experiences, for what they're worth!

Did your mate miss first gear or did he forget to take the handbrake off ?

The S2000 is a reasonably fast car but the Porsche should be a fair bit quicker

The real iss ue is that at 80/90/100 leptons, there really isn't going to be the massive differential that you think there should be with other cars in terms of straight line performance.

I had a Gen 3 MX-5 put his foot down the other week - both of us doing 80 leptons and whilst I obviously pulled ahead, I didn't obliterate him!

Besides, I look at it in terms of overtaking ability as on teh open road the S is easily fast enough.

The S, IMHO, lacks enough 3rd gear punch to dispatch the dawdlers. 300bhp would be enough, but if I can get 350 safely, then I might as well get it
