The earliest cars are approaching seven years old, so this is a problem that will rear its head sooner rather than later.
Thought you might be interested to see the start of the dreaded rust bug on my 20,000 miler '99 JDM, spotted when I removed the modded bumper to replace with the oem.
This is all front end stuff, either below the headlights or down low under the radiator.
At this stage, it's purely cosmetic and has only just started to get under the paint.
However, I know from experience that things only get worse in these situations, so the rotary wire brush will be out later, followed by rust killer, zinc rich paint and then hammerite.
Might be worth a peek if you are planning to keep your car.
And perhaps we might compile a list of any other areas where rust is known to start?
I've had warranty work done on mine already (rear wing to bumper join - abrasion between both caused the paint to start degrading and eventually the old metal worm got underneath - NB. you should have a thin rubber strip between rear bumper and rear wing now to stop this, if not get one! The rear bumper moves a LOT!) and I had a good look at the under carriage on my last service. I'm going to be doing the ol' underseal/hammerite job at the end of the summer!
Ive already had a boot lid replaced under warranty, as where the bump stops screw in had signs of rust coming through. Had the fronts resprayed as this was going the same and the bottom of the drivers door where the rust was coming through next to one of the drain holes on the hem. Sure ive seen stuff posted on here about it on the front and rear edges of the wings too.
In case anyone does find themself fixing stuff like this, resist the temptation to use a cheap primer - God forbid the grey or red rubbish from Halfords et al.
Get back to bright metal then use a rust killer/converter like Trustan.
Then for a primer, you cannot do better than this stuff - Galvafroid:
By way of recommendation, six years ago I painted a cast iron spike with this, followed by a normal enamel. Said spike sits on top of my house, some 24m up, 200yds from the sea. No corrosion whatsover.
I have had the rust treated twice now around the bump stops for the boot lid and even got the comment from the dealer "they all do that sir" when mentioning that this was the second visit for the same problem.
It only occured to me to check the front bonnets rubber bump stops after that 2nd visit Underneath them rust was attacking the top of the paint. WD-40 got it off but I now add that to my periodic maintenance.
