Rough sandpaper and/or a wire brush will do the same job.

Once you take it out of the car the thing will pretty much fall apart in front of you.

I used valve paste on mine, which seemed to have the same effect (even though it didn't actually stop my ticking ).

Can someone explain why sand blasting the worm gear fixes the TCT? I can't think of any reason why

I will do the tct sanding for ya mate. Although it'll only be the sandpaper method, not sandblasting.

I will add that I have done a few now, including mine over a year ago without reoccurance.

Or even before you take it out of the car .....

Last time I removed the TCT I removed the bolts and the TCT wouldn't move so I went into my garage to find a screwdriver ...... when I returned the TCT was in bits on my driveway

As far as I can work out, the worm gear should allow the piston to come out under oil pressure, but when the oil pressure drops (i.e. at idle), the tension from the chain shouldn't be enough to push the piston back in against the worm gear. But the worm gear becomes too smooth and shiny, and there isn't enough friction to stop the piston moving back in, hence lack of tension and rattle.

It's much the same as the way the rear brakes work.

Sandblasting the worm gear the rough surface which will be created will help to keep oil much more in the worm gear due to friction.

If i am correct you need also to sandblast and the inside of the piston for better friction
