Default Shudder...

Hey all,

So ever since owning my S...about 2.5 months now it has had a shudder under mid to heavy braking. Everything else appears normal, the steering is sharp and feels good, no shudder or vibration at any speeds or anything like that. So what is likely to be wrong other than warped discs? That was my first and only real idea as to what it could be, is there anything else I should be checking for? The car came with grooved front discs and the pads in the calipers are red so not sure what the setup currently is.

Also is there any simple check that can be done at home to confirm it a disc is warped?

Finally, if I do go about changing the discs/pads setup what would everyone recommend for normal road use? OEM just?

Thanks as always for any help

I'd say its what you've already thought yourself to be honest, warped discs. OEM replacements will be fine for road use

Have a look for pad material on the disk surface, probably on the rear disks.

Your disks wont be warped, but they will probably have some pad material on the face of the disk after putting the handbrake on hard after getting the disks nice and hot.

Best still to replace them, and and cheep if you can replace them yourself as well.

Remember to do the pads when you do the disks, don't use old pads on new disks regardless of how much material is left on them.

Sounds like warped disks to me.

Check you haven't got a seized caliper by taking the car for a drive and checking the temperature of the wheels immediately after stopping. It's unlikely considering your explanation, but best to check.

As Floppy said, OEM is good, but so are disks from Brakes International, and OEM pads. If you'd like a little extra performance, consider fitting Ferodo DS2500 pads and/or a master cylinder brace, both of which have been well documented on here and will appear in a search.

Thanks, am heading out shortly so will check the wheels for heat to see if any calipers are sticking.

One final description which will maybe help diagnose...hard to describe it but when I am coming to a complete stop from speed the car kind of "chugs" to a stop as such, if that makes sense? Feels like it rolls freely through part of the brake pads then catches a little and so on...hence the sort of chugging to a stop feel.

Hmmm, checked the wheels there when I got home, hard to tell I could feel heat coming off the discs, the one alloy I thought did seem a bit hotter than the others was the back drivers side wheel, not sure what it is now...always got the feeling the shudder was coming from the front of the car when it happened.

Maybe best taking it somewhere to have the brakes looked at.

Not sure what the brake setu is as I have only owned the car just over 2 months, they are grooved/slotted type discs and the pads are red in colour I can see them in the caliper.
