Skid Pan
Had mine on the Essex Police skid pan on saturday, what a laugh! 360,180,540 the lot all at slowish speed. Once or twice got into major understeer yes believe it or not, but instructor did not think unusual . Manage 90% of one lap with tail out at crazey angle.
With regard to comments elswhare it was interesting to note that the other car on the pan with me was newish Vectra and a good driver, I kept catching him up in one or two laps even on S02's in the wet with a lubricant !

No Tiff but just a little benefit of being a full member , yes I passed , not sure how .
It was free also to use the skid pan , I believe other people have to pay , but the local IAM group meets in Essex Police Sports and Social Club also. Got my certificate and handshake from a former Assistant Chief ****sable , bit worrying really !!

I'm sure none of us have any need to worry about meeting the boys in blue....
Seriously , the ****stable was OK .
The IAM is worth doing , not for performance driving but for every day motoring, it makes for a safer and more relaxed drive, and believe it or not sometimes faster A to B.
I was very sceptical about this when first told but it sometimes does work . Like all teaching it is something you also adapt to suit yourself once you understand the principal .
Used most of the technique's in wales , used a lot less brake pad than many and kept up with every one I followed !

Good to here that you are an IAM member, I have been since Feb 2000. Good driving techniques but as you say, mainly for road driving. Certainly increases your awareness of what you are doing and what is going on around you. Well Done. I didn't get any chance using a skid pan though, that must have been useful additional training. I'll have to ask a colleague of mine (incidently he gave me my IAM training and trains the Hampshire police high speed response drivers) if he knows of any other good training courses that include skid control training etc.

Generally the answer is no to insurance company discounts, one or two do but they tend to be expensive before you start .
Of coarse IAM drivers are on average involved in 50% fewer crashes so your no claims is less likely to be reduced . But again the insurance companies want it all ways and make even more from IAM drivers.
It seems to me that insurance companies are only interested in taking the max possible amount of our cash and then crying about losing money. Recent experiance tells me that if they tried a bit harder they could reduce thier losses through uninsured drivers ect .
Why do we not take not of what some other Countries do , an Insurance disc as well as a tax disc , all could see if the person was insured and which company. Most unisured people get away with it because no one nows until they crash or comit a road traffic offence ?
