Smack That Map
The car's been a bit sluggish lately, and it got a lot worse last week.
Lots of "spluttering" at cruising (circa 5k rpm), not going into Vtec as early or as switly as it should etc. Just not good.
So I gave the map sensor a couple swift sharp smacks with the thick end of my ice scraper and now she's running like a dream.
The question is why?
What's in there, what's it made of, and why does it get "jammed up"?

Its a pressure sensing device which is used by your ECU to determine engine load. It helps to govern the cars fuelling based on what pressure it sees. Its quite a delicate thing, and can be prone to ingesting oil mist, which will probably harden on inside.
What can happen when one fails badly, is that it will cause the car to run a bit lean. When you run lean you heat up, and can cuse pre-detonation of the fuel. This is called pinking / knock / det. In bad cases it can destroy your engine over time. Thats an extreme case but it can happen.
Now do you want to keep whacking it with a big stick?
On a serious note, if its causing repeated bother, just buy a new one.
