snow + worn rear s02's = no fun :(

our house has quite a steep drive leading up to the street. the 2 inches of snow we had last night meant that it took me 30 mins to clear the 20ft of drive this morning and i still had to take 4 runs at reversing up the drive.

50 yards down the road i had to pull off the 'tracks' in the snow to let another car past coming in the opposite direction. this was on a hill and i promptly got stuck again and had to walk back to the house to get the spade which now resides in the passenger seat.

1/2 a mile further down the road i see a car coming in the other direction. now on a downhill slope i try to brake doing all of 5mph and the anti clock starts kicking in by the brakes have absolutely no effect at all the car slithers down the hill. thankfully the car coming the other way saw my problem and reversed back out of the way.

ironically, i am booked in for an MOT and new tyres on Monday. Why couldn't that have been last monday!

abs can be nigh on useless in this sort of weather. Should be a switch to disengage it in these conditions.

...which is why you shouldn't leave it to the last mm before changing them! How much tread do you have?

James_N 02-23-2005 01:34 AM

i think if i owned an S in this weather, id leave it at home :rev:

about 2mm. they are legal, but barely. yep, its my own fault but i had been putting off geting them changed until my mot was due so i could get them done at the same time. fronts are virtually brand new.

i have been driving like miss daisy in the wet for a while now!

however i wasn't expecting them to be quite so bad in the snow. My old mr2 turbo was no where near as much as a handful in the snow last year with the same size tyres. that being said it was mid engined so there was much more weight over the rear wheels whichmust make a big difference.

I think you will find that no matter how much tread you have, once the treads are packed out with snow the end result is that same, you will be :drunk: all day long. The problem is the tyre width which acts more like a ski, the only real option is to leave the S at home or narrow tyres preferrable with spikes :rev: (latter not being an option).

You're not going to see any difference with the new one's on.
S02's and hard packed snow just don't mix.

Can't you just pull out a fuse for it?

My rears are level with the wearbands. This is purely cos I have a trackday on saturday. However, it looks as if i will have to put new ones on for the track now due to the weather - let alone the road if we get snow here!

i'd be tempted to put the new ones on and keep the old ones for trackday tyres. depending on where you are going, there are normally tyre fitters at the tracks to deal with exactly this sort of issue. that's what i'll be doing with my old tyres.
