Default Soft driving?

I've had the new car for 11 months now, just had the first service and tread depth is 5mm all round. I remember needing new tyres after my 01 reg was 10 months old (I'd bought it second hand 6 months old).

So, does this mean that the old one had been hammered? I've driven the new one too softly? New tyres are more hard wearing than the originals?

What tread depth do you start with?

IIRC you start with around 8mm

But to have 5mm remaining after 11 months, suggests you need to get out and drive it more

This thread is useless without knowing the mileage.

FWIW my rears were changed at 11,500 miles and the fronts are still OK at 15,000.

Just changing my rears this week, 11500 miles, 3mm on the rears, 5mm on the fronts.

My original rear tyres(SO2s) were not changed by the previous owner until 15,500 miles mostly due to it being stuck on an Island (Guernsey).I changed the fronts at 21,500 miles.

Just changed my rears (had 2mm on them). That was after 9 months. Fronts still fine

What mileage did they do, time is irrelevant?
