Thumbs up Sometimes dealers get it wrong?

Just took the S into Honda for an MOT.

I asked them to check out a tinkling noise from under the bonnet which sounded to me like a loose cowling. I first noticed it after I had royally abused the car on an Andy Walsh Car Limits day. The noise is only noticeable when I first start the engine.

I agreed to Honda spending an hour investigating. They have come back to me and said that they notice that the timing chain is slightly slack and that to rectify the problem would take a day

There is no way they can check the timing chain tension unless they remove alot off the front of the engine, so they are telling porkies if they reckon it's slack.

If the chain is going to go...it'll make a racket, then snap...unlikely though (unless your name is Dave).

As with all timing chain woes and rattling noises, change the TCT first.

As for the aux tensioner, that has nothing to do with the timing chain, they are having you on!

I would believe that both could be changed in a pub car park, the easiest would be the auxiliary belt tensioner and they would only really expect someone to change that in a car park.

Definitely not. It was definitely the TCT. I did mine a couple of weeks ago too, as you know.

I'm with loftust on this one.

Replacing the TCT and Aux belt Tensioner are both simple jobs.

They are taking the piss.

If you can quickly get hold of a TCT I am sure we could fit it for you at next weeks Herts meet for a little bit less than a day's labour

MQ - this is a simple job to do. If you have the right tools you could do it yourself. Even if the dealer does it it's 0nly a 30 min job tops.

Ask to speak directly to the master tech at your dealer and ask him not to talk bollocks to you. Maybe show him the pictures from the link FistralG posted.
The part should cost more than the labour to fit it.

Thanks everyone. I am actually quite familiar with TCT issues. I have had a blow by blow account of Gritty fitting his and have seen the pic of one in For Sale And Wanted posted by the guy who was asking for a discarded one.

The dealer was quite adamant though and I started to doubt my facts.

On my bill it says,"Check engine noise. Remove rocker cover and inspect all valve rockers and shafts. All look OK. There is some slack in the timing chain which may cause fault but we need to strip engine further to check if the chain was the cause, then you would be looking at approx 1100 to replace."

When the receptionist read this to me over the 'phone I was not worried thinking that the chain would only need a new tensioner which I know to be a fairly simple and short operation.

When I suggested this to the service manager he disagreed and drew me a diagram which from memory looked a bit like this:

I suppose the
