Had a look around and can't find a definitive answer! Basically the spark plug and coilpack in cylinder 3 melted causing the thread in the spark plug housing to become useless. This is obviously resulting in no compression in cylinder 3 so the engine won't start. What is the best way to rethread the spark plug housing? Is there any way to do this without removing the entire cylinder head? Thanks!

 

Sure you can retap, with grease on the end in situ at TDC.

Your problem is going to be swarf and making sure none of it will stay in the head because not 100% all of it will attach onto the grease, probably blow it out. And removing all grease in the head when your done.

Also doing it straight and true as engine is slightly tilted.

Your best way to re-thread the spark plug hole would be to remove the head, there will be no chance of any shavings entering the combustion chamber that way.

Were you able to remove the entire plug or did it break off in the head?
I ask this because I have recently seen one that had broken off in the head and someone drilled the remainder of the plug and tried to re-thread the hole, the engine is now ruined and there was a pile of shavings in the combustion chamber that gouged the cylinder walls.

if you do take the head off and re-thread, do it from the inside out.

Use Time Sert. It is made for this kind of problem. I've used the Time Sert on my F20 and it is worth the money since you don't have to pull the head.

 

An engine swap will cost you £3k+ on this car. Take the head off and get it done professionally imo

Have you looked inside and checked the bore? Where did the molten plug go and why did it melt?

 

get it fixed and sell the car, dont think i would ever feel comfortable with that in the back of my mind, would be worried about the plug backing out again, or something being behind and causing damage down the line. But i am paranoid about stuff like that lol
