Default Speaker Interference

Right, I have gone through an completely upgraded the stereo system within the car.

Amp is in the boot and speakers have had new thicker wire fitted through. Yes, that was a b4stard to do!

Anyway, finally fitted my amp today, and turned on.

Great - nice and loud

So I went for a test drive.

Whining

Not loud, but enough to be annoyed with. Also get pulses of clicking on tickover.

Now, am I needing a cap or is a simpler solution of a ferrite ring enough to remove this fly in the ointment?

TIA

I had this problem with the FD2, most likely it's a bad earth OR the power cables for the amps have been run along the same bit as phono cables from the headunit to the amps.

Make sure your amp is earthed properly and even better if it's earthed to the same place the stereo is earthed to. Also ensure that your power cables run down one side of the car and the speaker cables on the other.

You could also plug in a ground loop isolator (10quid from halfords or less from ebay) but that didn't work much for me.

If it helps my Dad had the same problem with the Linn sound system in his Aston Martin

Are the speaker wires down the sills and the amp power cable down the side of the tranmission tunnel? That should minimise interference.

Ignition noise injection on to speaker cables or crossovers IMHO

Yeah, it is short, but the wire is a bit thin and the contact probably a bit crap.

I still think that the power wire is the main concern, although I will try the nice beefed up earth first JIC as it is a hellofalot easier to do, especially with hayfever kicking my a55 at the mo!
