Default Speed Trap Detectors

Hi All

Knowing nothing what so ever about these devices can anyone give me any recommendations as what to go

for, I see that over on www.Audi-Sport.Net there is a group buy going on for the Road Pilot & the Geodesy

Plus with 15-20% discount which sounds good to me, anybody fitted one? Any comments?

Thanks Rog

I think it's important to understand that there are two basic types of device and you probably need both for good all round protection:-

(1) Radar/Laser detectors which intercept radar and laser signals and sound visual and audible warnings.
I have a Valentine 1 which falls in this category but it wont warn against SPECS or Truvelo devices. they only sound a warning if there is a real threat.. they don't sound on 'dud' cameras.

(2) Geodesey type devices which contain a database of all known threats and warn of their proximity by means of GPS detection of your postion in relation to them. They warn of all threats whether the device is armed or not, and need to be kept regularly updated with the postion of new threats.

I need to invest in one of the Geodesey type devices at some stage, but at the moment all my driving is in Gatso City so the V1 does me proud.

I have both a Geodesy Pro, and a RoadPilot. Both are very good, but the RoadPilot is cooler. You can possibly justify the extra expense of the RoadPilot with the feature that allows one to keep track of business / commuting / personal mileage. My Geodesy Pro will be up for sale once I get around to mounting the RoadPilot permanently.

A GPS device is mostly useful for travelling unknown roads. If you know your route, then no point in getting one.

I also have a Bell 550 for Radar & Laser (rarely used, as I driver very slowly).

I bought the RoadPilot at the same time as Chris, replacing the S6-R and I am more than happy with it. Personally I like the GPS tracker feature so that you can retrace your movements should you get lost; something I'm good at. Oh yes it has a clock as well - the audi group buy sounds very promising.

I also like the fact that you can easily remove the display so that no thieves are likely to be tempted to break into the car to knick it. It looks nice and techy too (SatNav upgrade pending apparently).

For the radar/laser detection bit I opted for a diffuser as radar seems to be pretty much defunct round the Midlands and there are too many stories that by the time you've detected the laser you've been caught - better to prevent the camera logging your speed in the first place is my outlook. You need to take car as they may become illegal "Perverting the Course of Justice" excuse and your best to get the kit tested so you don't fall into the trap of being over confident that you will always detect.

I'm happy that it does what it is supposed to do very well. Not too many false alerts. I would tend to agree with ChrisX16 that a laser jammer + GPS is probably the best solution. One of the problems with having all manner of gadgets in the car is that they rapidly replace real estate. Also, it's a PITA to remove & hide gadgets everytime you park somewhere. The Geodesy pro is good in this regard, as it can be mounted out of sight underdash.

Whats the score with it?
What would you like to know ? It's a really cool (cannot emphasize this enough ) gadget. It does the GPS very well, is easy on the eye, etc. The user interface is very intuitive

As ChrisX16 has already responded to the positives, let me focus on the negatives :

9200 RPM generates a lot of vibration - no good trying to read the time when redlining.
Very desirable - must always remove (until I mount under dash)
Touchscreen operation is not accurate when driving (again vibration)

I would give it 4.5 / 5. It would be very very nice if the display could be hooked to some sort of GPS mapping device - the display is quite large - certainly large enough for reading while driving.

CTR

PS: The packaging rocks

I'm in on the audi-net group buy at the moment for a RoadPilot. If we can get the required 25 names, you'll save

I use a Snooper 5 and it works a treat on Gatso's and mobile radar. It also does laser but I've never been shot by one so I don't know how it performs.
Also it fixes up really neatly on the windscreen behind/slightly underneath my rear view mirror (very subtle) and perfect place to monitor whats going on with the display (it has audio and volume control too).
...oh and it looks cool too
