Default Steering Column Stud Broken

Hi.

I managed to brake one of the steering coloumn studs at the top when tightening up. Wasnt actually tight at all!

Anyway i cant get a but on the sheared end as it doesnt protrude enough.

The steering wheel is secure andoesn't move at all so i am not too bothered.

But i would like to fix. Any suggestions as to how?

Mike

You're gonna have to drill it & use a bolt extractor.

Bloody awkward to drill that straight.

Can you not knock it round with a small chisel? or cut a little line in it so you can unscrew it with a screwdriver. Not sure which bolt this is so access might be abit of a bitch. i know before i have been able to tap sheared bolts and studs out using a mallet and a chisel and gradually knock it round.

Its a metal stud that is angled downwards and the steering coloumn is pushed up to it and then a nut it used to hold it in place.

Its the threaded stud which is broken. I think the next time i have the dasj out i will cut it off and then drill a hole

Sorry to bump an old post but i have this exact problem. My column has a lot of sag because 1 of the 2 studs is broken at the top. Any chance you got this fixed and if so how?

Hi there,

Yes I got it fixed, I had a local garage sort this for me.

Unfortunately it involves removing the entire dashboard, drilling out the broken stud and then dropping a bolt of the same size into the hole and welding it in place. This cost me about £100 but I was able to remove the dash prior to delivering the car.

I tried several fixes such as nut extenders, re-threading the top part of stud, none of this worked. I would highly recommend welding in a new bolt.

I hope the above helps.

Dang, Thats what i thought i was going to have to do i really just didnt want to have to remove my dash so iv been putting it off for over a year. i was hoping maybe i could get access to it if i removed the speedo and the clip with all the controls it. If you dont mind me asking, was the bolt visible or in the open at all when you had just the speedo pulled?

The top of the stud is visible but it is welded to the frame of the car. There it not enough access to get a drill in there to drill it out. it may be possible to saw the stud flat to the base and then drill upwards and through, then drop a bolt through from the top down through the new hole.

Removing the dash isnt ideal but it is far easier than most think.

Yea i figured having enough room to access the bolt without removing the dash would be the real problem. I just may give it a shot at cutting the bolt flat and drilling it our from the bottom before i go about ripping my dash out. I mean i really dont have much to lose as the bolts broken off half way anyways. Thank you for the information and advice i really appreciate it.
