Default Stereo Choice

With the help of mikey k I have decided to spend a little cash on a half decent HU and some door speakers

I have come across this model and it looks pretty good, just wondered if anyone had this one or one for a similar price that you perceive to be better?

Thoughts appreciated

I nearly purchased one of these, however I was told that the controls for the ipod are very poor and very longwinded. I have since purchased the Alpine 9853R which has "Glide Touch" to control the IPOD and is a vast improvement. This isnt of concern unless you do intend to connect the IPOD. My system is being installed on Saturday and I will let you know how good it is.

i've got the 9847r and the ipod set up and its ok, not fantastic.

but then i do have approx 3,500 tunes at my fingertips....

the only thing i will say and i got it from someone else on this forum is that you need to set up a few playlists to make life easier, instead of searching for a song and wrapping your beloved S round a tree with all the distraction.

good luck with it....

what speakers you putting on? not changed mine yet.

Yes I have this HU and the dash control interface and the ipod interface.

The stereo is pretty good. The dash control works well.

The ipod interface isn't great. I have 4300 tunes on the ipod, and selecting the one (or the album) you want is sooo slllloooww that I don't bother. The trouble is that it 'docks' with the ipod, disabling the ipods interface forcing you 2 use the HU.

What you have to do is either set up playlists like ag197 said, or the other tip I can give is :

Unplug the ipod, select the song / album you want using the ipod, press play and plug it back in. It then starts playing through.

A better solution IMHO would be to not bother with the ipod interface, and connect a 3.5mm jack cable to the aux in the back of the HU, and buy a powered cradle for the ipod. then you can use the ipod interface all the time.

Also, IMO, don't bother changing the speakers unless you put an amp in too. Changing the speakers will give a clearer sound, but no more bass.

I have the 9853R. I can't compare it to the others as I have only experienced this, but the glide touch thing is a bit of a pain sometimes. It's absolutely fine apart from the scrolling mechanism (scroll left/right for more options) which I just can not get the hang of. It's hard enought to get right when stationary, so you can forget it when driving.

I also changed the door speakers and have been very impressed, it's def better than the stock speakers.

Do you need any other box of tricks to plug into an aux socket, or do you just plug it straight in and select AUX?

I was thinking of getting a new HU so I can plug my PDA into it both for TomTom guidance and MP3/wma TRACKS.

I've got a soft spot for Alpine amps and Gensis gets a thumbs up from one of the wiser ICE S2000 members. Your infintiy tweeters will sound very bright in my experience - if you've got component speakers then make sure the tweeters attenuation on the cross overs is minimised (-4dB ?)
