Default Sticking caliper

Hi all,

My rear left brake caliper has decided to mess about the last week with an intermittent sticking problem.

As I type this it has been 5 days since it last did it, but it was very noticeable (and hot!) last time.

I am due to drive to Goodwood this weekend so want it to be working this weekend.

I was thinking of dropping it to the garage down the road from work and ask them to strip and clean the brakes.

Would that be enough to keep me going for a little while so I can get Goodwood out of the way??
I imagine that it will only cost an hour or 2 in labour?

Just wondering what the recommended route is,
1: Strip and clean lubricate brakes
2: Caliper rebuild kit (tegiwa/eBay)
3: Refurbished caliper (eBay)
4: brand new caliper(seems excessive/expensive!)

I have had this problem before with a front caliper but I bought a whole new front brake setup as there was a group buy going on and don't intend to do the same with the rear.

Thanks,

Ian.

Refurb, and send your old one back for a lower cost.

Most of them do, as do brakeparts.co.uk, bigredd etc

Found another that has a pair for £180

or

My issue is that I want to use the car this weekend and I doubt I'll be able to get these bought delivered and fitted in time.

It is the long term solution but if I wanted to use the car for a long journey this weekend would a strip/lubricate/clean job be enough in the short term??

Do not but from the second link, Dewsbury auto Salvage are a bunch of cowboys.

It depends what's seized. If it's the piston, then you're in trouble, as that's a pig of a job, if it's the pins, then a clean up will most likely suffice.

If you are able to refurb yourself, (or have a friendly mechanic that is happy to do it, then a refurb kit will probably do.

Failing that, the Civic Type R calipers fit:

I got on much better with the Brakes International Budweg refurb kits than the BiggRed ones - not much in it though. the rear caliper needs long nose cir clip pliers and is a right PITA to do (getting the new boot back on) as LG says above, I'd see if the pins/pad guides are the cause in the first instance if they are - jobs a goodun if not go refurb/pattern part. Not sure the time for a mechanic is worth a rebuild and would probably work out quicker for them to bolt a more expensive "new" caliper on than to take the old one apart refurb and refit. Those £180 Nissin ones would be the option I'd choose if you can get them in time for fitting before Goodwood.

I'm going to FoS on Sat, but not taking the S2000 this year as I want to drink the Goodwood Organic Lager instead

Having cleaned and refurbished both sets of calipers on mine, I'd happily pay for a refurbed set! Horrible job!

PS Enjoy GFOS, I'm there Thursday-Sunday.
