Default Stuttering at 70mph...

driving along the motorway yesterday and the car started stuttering between about 68 and 78 mph, in 6th gear. a real judder where the revs just drop. really odd cos i can reduce the speed to 40 in the same gear and floor it and it pulls away fine.

doesn't do it in any other gear even on the same revs. checked the oil level which is fine. plugs replaced last september at 54k service. i've had the map sensor problem but that was hitting vtec about 7k and a completely different feeling to this. i've not whacked it yet this time - think it's worth it.

i'm stumped.

any thoughts?

The MAP sensor has only ever been reported as "Stuttering in Vtec" as opposed to this (6th gear 70MPH).

I would initially look for a fuel / air issue

Mine had a flat spot/hesitation under load (not in VTEC) which was a faulty Map Sensor

Can be either. MAP is used for fuelling all the time.

Throttle potentiometre (the switch on the throttle body) is my guess

Because it is a speed related issue, the fact its at 70mph makes it more certain.

Get the voltage checked on the TP for flat spots.

If the TPS had a flat spot it would happen at the same throttle position at any gear at any speed.

What im saying is speed and TPS arent really related.

They rarely fail IMO.
