what beside hearing a ticking sound would cause a driver to know he needs a tct

The ticking noise is pretty much the only "tell" to listen for.

It's a specific sound that only TCT makes. You have to be able to distinguish fron valve tapping noise or any othe ticking noise. Plenty of youtube videos to check the sound

At the end of the day if it is a honda tct then just replace it, if it hasnt failed it will, prevention is sometimes better than cure.
