Help my knob is held on with thread-lock and when I twist it vigorously to get it off I think I might be damaging my shaft!

What can I do to make it release?

Yes! I've been pulling and twisting it for ages but it just isn't happening!!

 

You have slackened the lock nut haven't you.

 

There's no locking nut, it's a Spoon Titanium but it's well and truly stuck.

All joking apart I am a bit reluctant to really twist it for fear of harming the gear/gate internals below. Is there any real chance of buggering up the mechanism or not?

Heat is the best way to free thread lock. If it's a solid metal knob then get a heat gun on it, a hair drier just won't get hot enough.

 

you could also try a pair of locking plyers around the 'shaft' so you dont twist it...

 

Yup, heat.
Grip the shaft hard and out of sight with molies or pipe wrench.
Use a marigold glove on your knob hand, and twist slowly but firmly.

 

If there's a sudden release of transmission fluid, you've gone too far...
