Default TOYO TYRES - Help please..

I know there have been a few (!) tyre threads recently but having read these ive just about decided to go for Toyos for a bit more cold/wet weather grip (currently runing s02s) and need to know the correct model/sizes as i know this is pretty vital! (Also guide prices as to what others have paid would be helpful).

Also, do i need to replace all 4 as the fronts are still pretty good (3-4mm)?

Thanks in advance

Matt

Now this is somewhere i can help... hopefully.

I beleive the sizes you require for MY02 are 245/40/16 rear and 225/45/16 fronts but get a second opinion just in case.

I've had all four on mine since Friday and now they're bedded in they feel great... haven't felt any sidewall flexing and the Toyo T1R's are now carrying a brand new tread pattern (even though the tyre's been around some time) which i think channels the water off far better.

I'ts up to you but i would change them all at the same time as mine didn't feel good at all mixed with the Bridgestones and i went thru all manner of things thinking something else was wrong... the back end will seem void of any response then suddenly snap across when manouvering at speed which could be really dangerous.

I think the tyres are great and do feel grippier, time will tell on durability.

I paid

Try phoning Eventmobiletyres, they came round to mine a few months ago to fit TR1's, very happy with the tyres.

Great service and they visit you at home if needed, cost

What is the reasoning for fitting a 245 instead of 225 back?

Its 245 x 45 x 16 on the back , the Fronts are the same look up any tyre size calculater to check the R/radius. 40 profile is too small

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I believe the current law is +2 to -3% over/undersized as this effects your speedo

What is the reasoning for fitting a 245 instead of 225 back?
Because the rears are a special size, 225 in radial width but in actual tread width they are on par with wider tyres.

225 JZ SO2's are 8.5" 11.3KG
225 x 50 SO3's are 8.3" 11.8KG
225 x 50 RE050 's are 8" 11.3kg

Toyo T1 245 are 9.8" closest you can get @ 9.8kg , S03 in 245 x 45 is 9.1 " wide but 11.8 KG each.

The Stock 225's are 25"overal Diameter , this needs to be taken into account too as different brands for the same size have different OD's. The T1R in 245 are 24.96 and the SO3s are 24.6"

Also the T1r's are "AA" temp rated the So2's are only "A" which means b4 u ask that the T1R can run higher temps b4 going off

I contacted Toyo directly about this and a guy called Alan Meaker emailed me back saying ...

"I am assuming your car is fitted with OE Bridgestone's 205/55R16 front and 225/50R16 rear. From the information I have the OE 225/50R16 Bridgestone rear is wider than other makes of tyre of the same size and to get an equivalent sized tyre you have to fit a 245/45R16 (7.5" to 9.0" wide rim required). From the info I have you fit the original size on the front."

Sounds like Toyo are on the ball ...

I still haven't made up my mind yet though. OEM Potenzas or Toyo T1-Rs ...

Blimey! Someone who knows his stuff. Top banana.

I should warn that the Proxes sidewall is quite flexy, so you will lose some turn-in and throttle-steer.

Like most JP tyres, they don't do the snow/slush well at all!

He he well I ran the T1r's on the Evo so did some homework b4 I got the S Yep the Toyo does have a softer sidewall but not as soft as say the F1's.

Tyres are all personal but Ive just had nothing but excellent experiecne on these and Im sure will make a huge difference to the S.
