Just had oil change done and the chap at the garage said you put engine oil in the gearbox on these, is that right?

False.

The only cars I can think of where that is true are original Mini, A-Series engined Metro, A-Series engined Allegro, Austin/Morris 1100/1300 etc.

Given his lack of knowledge, make sure he's tightened the oil filter up using a strap wrench.

Hand tight doesn't cut it.

He isn't all that far off.

The manuals of Hondas gone by did indeed suggest engine oil in the gearbox!

Infact I wouldn't be suprised to find an old S2000 manual suggesting that.

The diff is the critical one with hypoid extreme pressure fluid required.

Guy at local Honda garage told me to stick MTF in it....

C'mon Ron.

It clearly says you can do this in the Honda manual as a "temprorary measure".

Its not ideal.

Steve, I wasn't suggesting to put engine oil in the box!!!

But, in Hondas of old, it was the recommended choice!

GL3/4 in gearbox, GL5 Hypoid in Diff
