Default Tyre decision

Hi all,

I do a bit of sprinting in my S and this year the tyre regs have been changed allowing stickier rubber in my class. Sadly, I don't have anywhere to store a spare set of wheels/tyres just for events, so in order to run 888's or another similar tyre I would need to put them on the car and use them day to day as well.

Firstly, what sort of mileage has anyone managed to get out of a set of 888's with day to day driving (plus the odd spirited B road blast) and secondly, with the minimal tread pattern are they deadly in the wet?

Any advice is greatly appreciated,
R

My experience of 888's was on a 250bhp MX5 weighing about 1 ton. I ran them from April thorugh to November then switched to winter tyres for the colder months.

I never tracked the car.

My views;

- Crazy, stupid, gravity defying grip
- Razor sharp turn in
- Awesome wet weather performance
- Fantastic braking even from cold
- Noisy
- Stiff sidewalls make for a very harsh ride
- Not great at temps below 5C and come with a health warning at or less than 32F

I tend to do about 5k miles a year, so the 888's were on for about 3k and still had good tread after 2 summers. Realistic mileage on an S should be less than 8k, more than 5k.

I'm putting them on mine, but I don't do many miles at all.

The solution to your wheels problem might be that some organisers (Bookatrack for one) will take your spare wheels and bring them to a track, and change them for you

Something worth thinking about.

Thanks Punchdrunk, very helpful indeed!

Thanks for the suggestion MB, but the sprint events are organised by local motor clubs and as far as I am aware this wouldn't be an option. Still, it's worth asking the question though.

I have run both 888's and Yokohama A048's on road cars, as above found them to be superb in all but very cold conditions or with large amounts of standing water.

Sadly his shed currently consists of 2 sets of wheels/tyres for his GT4 and the OEM exhaust from my S (plus all the usual lawnmower type stuff) and is currently at capacity.

My plan is to try and run the 888's from March to September and then stick my Bridgestones back on once the season is over.

I run 888s on a spare set of OEM 16s for trackdays, but don't like them day to day for road use. The 888s are great on track when you get them up to temperature, but not on the road. They are noisier, don't get up to temperature, and less forgiving than the SO2s I have on my other set of wheels. That said, I drove up to Oulton last November for a trackday in rain, and back to Birmingham in heavy rain, and I'm still here! You just need to be careful.

I take it if you are not on list 1A tyres then you are in Modprod or whatever it's called now?
