Default Uh-oh !

On the way to work this morning, hacking it through the infamous runway tunnels
It was quite busy though so never got the revs that high. Pulled on to the 56 and gave it some. What the hell's that noise ? When the car reves over about 8,500 it seems to be making a pretty odd noise. Sounds vaguely mechanical something loose or rattling or like pulling air..... I back off the power immediately but after a few minutes realising the car is going fine I try again fine right up to 8500 and then odd noise again.

When I got off the motorway and I stopped the car and then tried again still with the problem occuring.

I need to book my car in for a service anyway but anyone got any ideas ????

is it a quiet noise? Sounds like a washer rattling on a metal pipe?

Sounds like the famous 'ringing shifter' to me.

At high revs the gear stick linkage can make a loud metallic rattling sound. It can be cured by re packing the offending part with grease - a search on 'ringing' and 'shifter' should throw up a more detailed description.

but that is pretty quiet - hence my post. Definately worth investigating though as that is pretty simple to fix and if it isn't then you'll need to know what it is..

Will take a look when I go home and see if I can work out what is loose. Booked the car in next Thursday for its 18k service + diff oil change and asked them to take a look. Will see how it goes.....

Perhaps whatever was making the noise has dropped off! On the plus side, if that's the case, the car will be lighter now too!!
