Default using part worn tyres

Would using part worn tyres be a problem if the tyre depths are slightly different? eg one front tyre is 6.5mm then the other is brand new 8mm? I'm guessing the back is more important?

Well, you'll have one side with better water removal abilities than the other, so I'd not advise it, especially given the relatively low cost of new tyres compared with repairs...

Aslong as they are the same tyre on either side it wont make a difference,if they are different brands/makes of tyres they will each have different levels of grip and effect the handling.

However if one side had 1.5mm and the other is new then yes it will make a big difference.

Its not a good plan on the rear if the tread depths are significantly different.

The torsen diff is very sensitive to different rolling diameters. Hence the pulling to one side on acceleration and the other on deceleration that you experience if your tyre pressures are mismatched.

The S is very sensitive to tyre choice so i wouldn't skimp in this area, but if you are set on using part worns, make sure the rears are the same make and model of tyre and have similar tread depths.

The fronts are less important from that perspective.

That's interesting about the left/right pull.

I'm a little confused though as I has this quite badly and found I had a slow puncture in the front left and was very low pressure there.

Once this was sorted it was straight as an arrow.

Is this to so with the diff, or just drag from the low tyre?

Hi Peter, where are you getting your part worns from by the way???
Someone mixed the rears on mine and I want just a single tyre.

Really dumb question here.

But why would you risk your life, others and least importantly some piece of tin by putting part worns on a car?

They are the only thing connecting you to the road.

I really just don't get it.

Well if you can explain to me why putting a part worn Bridgestone with the same tread depth as the one already on is dangerous then go ahead?!?!?!?!
I'm just confused how it can be wrong.
Unless you're saying it could be damaged in some way then I understand.

You don't know the history of the tyre for starters.
What about the year of manufacture of the tyre?

Pretty good odds are it is not worn in the same way as the previous tyre. ( differing geo settings ). So what is the contact patch looking like?

If you can't afford to put decent tyres on a car - You can't afford the car.

Maybe I am just a belt and braces guy, when one tyre needs replaced - both get replaced for new ones.

To me - putting on a part worn is cutting corners regards safety - I really just do not understand.

But then again - in the old days I had a mate who used nothing but remoulds. Shivver..
