Vtec. Why has no one built a V8 version?
I too have often wondered this.
Last time was when a BMW sales rep I was recently chatting to was bigging up how "awesome" it is that the E92 M3 engine puts out 414hp from 4.0 and that it revs to as high as 8.4K RPM......
I have also often craved a 'S2500'. Sod upsetting the delicate handling balance. GIMME THE 9K RPM IN-LINE 5-POT SOUND AND 300 FRICKIN HORSE POWERS!

Power is the rate of doing work. When you can do that much work anyway, I guess there's no need to rev quite so hard and pull all that extra fuel into the block.
Perhaps it's just as easy to turbocharge when there's that many cylinders.
All that said I'm not an expert on cost/benefits appraisal when it comes to specifying high performance engines. Or even engines.
