Default What is wrong with my car?

I know how much we all hate trying to diagnose engine sounds but I feel that others may have the same problem. I'm getting a strange sound from the engine area and it comes on only after 3K RPM. The sound is like a quick ticking sound which eventually fades away when VTEC is engaged - I think the vtech note masks the strange sound but is hard to tell.

Another way of describing the sound is a hand-held fan coming into contact with paper, but not as loud.

can anyone shed some light and help me to diagnose this?

When did you check your oil last?

I checked it yesterday, and the engine oil level is fine. I have read the posts in the engine forum and I'm suspicious that it could be the timing belt tensioner. What do you guys think?

That is usually a rattle at idle just after the car is started, usually when warm. It then goes away. At least mine did when I had that.

Does it do it on the move or just when revving?

Reading the posts from the american owners it seems like they change their timing belt tensioners fairly frequently. It has also become apparent that by not changing it can have devastating effects on the engine. I'm probably in a hyper state of paranoia but thought I should collect some feedback before I present the problem to the stealers.

Dark blue Mark - it happens on both but more noticeable when moving.

Hmmm,

Lift the bonnet and use the throttle arm to rev the car, or get someone to blip the throttle from the inside.

Allows you to get your head right under there. At least you will be able to determine if its inside or outside the engine.
